Claire posted a photo of an inconsistent espresso puck on her profile, half as a joke. Ben replied with a serious, detailed diagnosis involving tamping pressure and ambient humidity. She wrote back immediately.

The first date was a Saturday morning at a coffee bar in Capitol Hill. They walked afterward to the Arboretum, through cedar and Douglas fir, and Ben admitted he had not been on a proper walk in nine months. Claire understood. In Seattle you either find someone who will drag you outside or you do not.

They got married two summers later on San Juan Island, in a ceremony small enough to fit into a borrowed farmhouse. Ben’s engineering team sent a roaster as a wedding gift; it sits, ceremonially, on a shelf in Claire’s shop.
