Harper had been skeptical of any romance that began during SXSW — the city runs on adrenaline that week, and adrenaline rarely lasts past Monday. Wyatt messaged her the Sunday after everyone flew home, asking if she wanted to try the breakfast tacos at Veracruz All Natural without the conference badge crowd.

They spent the next month at places the week-long visitors never found — the greenbelt trail behind Zilker, a quieter corner of the Continental Club on a Tuesday, a barbecue pilgrimage out to Lockhart on a Sunday afternoon. He was born in Lubbock; she had moved from Brooklyn three years earlier.

Last July they bought a small house in East Austin with a pecan tree in the backyard. They host a potluck every other month for friends who, like them, had not planned to stay in Texas and somehow did.
