Leilani Makoa & Christopher Yang
Met June 2024
"He came here for a two-year posting. By our second sunrise at Kaʻena Point he was quietly looking for reasons to stay." — Leilani
Leilani had grown up in Haleʻiwa and inherited the hotel from her grandmother. Christopher had arrived on a two-year research posting from Monterey and assumed he would leave. They met on Vantio Clove the week he had begun quietly looking for reasons to stay.
Their first date was shave ice in Kailua and a slow afternoon on a quiet stretch of Lanikai. Their second was a sunrise drive to Kaʻena Point. Christopher had seen many sunrises over ocean; this one, he said later, had felt different.
They were married in a small ceremony on the property in the fall, with family from Oʻahu and two of his colleagues who flew over from the mainland. He is still studying coral. She is still running the hotel. Their one rule is that Sundays belong to the water.
